Personal Stories

These are a selection of quotes from the personal stories of those born at Hazlewood castle between 1939- 1953

"On being informed of my birth, in a castle no less, proudly informed the whole town after the war was over they made the trip back, at that time my father bore a striking resemblance to King George VI. So with me being born in Hazlewood castle and the fact that my father's name also George, the rumour flew round the town that Josie was back and she had married the King of England !"

"I visited the castle with my family when it was owned by the Carmelite Friars on one of the open days in the early 1980's and a couple of times enjoyed their home made scones in the refectory as a half way stop whilst in the area. I took mum to an open day in 1987 and we had a wonderful day and enjoyed a tour to include the delivery suite"

" I remember mother telling us about the day whent the owners were having a dinner party for high society guests & mother was asked to help cook the pheasants for dinner. When mother saw the phesants hanging in the pantry covered in large maggots she took them down and washed them off and cooked the birds. The birds were served at dinner and the lady in charge asked mother where the maggots were she told her she had washed them off and put them in a basin. To which the lady replied oh gosh Bessie that's the best way to eat pheasant, you should have used them in the gravy"

"We were 'Three little princesses; born in a castle; I have always thought that something rather magical.

Mum would often recall the incident of when a special visitor arrived via the french windows. The uninvited guest being a cow which calmly ambled through the doors and stood in the middles of the ward calmly chewing the cud whilst surveying the new arrivals!"
